Dr. Carney has a Ph.D. in History from the University of Alabama and teaches at Western Governors University. Her primary research interests include American religious history, gender history, and the history of the U.S. South. Her first book, Ministers and Masters: Methodism, Manhood, and Honor in the Old South was released by LSU Press in November 2011. She is also working on a book manuscript on the making of the modern American megachurch.

She has a three cats: Eli Cash (23 pounds of pure panther power), Margot, and Professor Strauss; hearts Slobberbone from Denton, TX; and is married to Court Carney (thanks to Vegas, a vineyard, and the best Elvis money could buy).
